Autumn is here! The leaves are changing colours, the days are shorter, and the mornings are getting chiller. Summer has faded away, and whilst you may miss it, autumn is amazing in its own way and absolutely worth celebrating. Kick off the start of pumpkin season with these traditionally autumnal activities.
Go Pumpkin Picking
It’s time for the spotlight to switch focus to the humble pumpkin. Not terribly popular outside of October, they can be found almost anywhere in the fall – from pumpkin spice lattes in coffee shops, to window displays in fashion boutiques. Whether you’d prefer to buy them from the supermarket or not, visiting a pumpkin patch in autumn is a great way to start the season. After you’ve removed the innards to make a pumpkin feast, make a jack-o-lantern with the shell and put it on your windowsill to scare your neighbours! Don’t forget to keep the seeds – they taste great roasted.
Have a Bonfire
Short days and frosty weather make the perfect combination for a bonfire. Bring along a box of sparklers to kick off the party and don’t forget the s’mores!
Visit an Orchard.
The prime months for apples is September and October so now is the time to go apple picking. Many orchards open their doors to the general public around autumn to encourage people to do some picking. There are so many autumnal recipes featuring apple, like cider, butter, and apple sauce. Even if apple isn’t your thing, wandering through the trees is still a great way to spend an afternoon.
Take a Scenic Drive
One of the most beautiful times of the year, autumn is a great time to take a road trip. With all the trees turning vibrant oranges and reds, you’ll enjoy a drive with the windows down through wooded roads and winding country.
Take some Photos
Multi-coloured leaves and teaming autumnal wildlife make perfect subjects for a spot of photography.
Collect Pine Cones
Having a goal when you go for a walk helps keep the kids amused, and pine cones are great to bring back home for crafts. You can paint them for pretty autumnal decor, make an early Christmas wreath, or put them in a bowl and use them as a table centrepiece.
Take a Holiday at Home
There’s no need to book the next flight to Florida when England is so scenic this time of year. We highly recommend the south east for your holiday at home, with its various outstanding areas of natural beauty, including the popular surrey hills. Either way, Gable End is the perfect choice whether you would like to enjoy the autumnal English countryside or if you do decide to opt for a holiday abroad as we are just 5 minutes from Gatwick Airport.
