When hearing the word ‘Gatwick’, most of us automatically think of the airport. However, beyond the departure lounges and duty free shops, there is a wealth of adventure right here in the south of England.

More and more families are choosing to holiday here in the UK, saving money and enjoying the many great attractions that our own country has to offer. Whilst many still flock to Devon and Cornwall for their summer break, we think that the south east of England has enough on offer to seriously rival the West Country.

Our beaches are some of the finest in the country, with unspoiled white sands and long walks stretching out for miles. Try West Wittering, West Worthing, and Littlehampton for some idyllic coastal fun, where the water is clean and the kids can safely play for hours. If sea air is more your thing, try Brighton, where the very British seaside charm and lively atmosphere make for a truly unique and unforgettable day out.

Fish and chips and ice cream on the beach may be traditional English seaside fayre, but there is a whole lot more to enjoy on a holiday to the south east. We have both Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park just up the road from Gable End: perfect for an adrenalin-fuelled adventure. Chessington has plenty to entertain all ages, whilst Thorpe Park is probably best reserved for teens and above.

For younger children, there’s also a wealth of fun to be had. Try Holmbush Farm just outside Crawley for a petting zoo that’s both manageably sized and a mere stone’s throw from Gatwick. Slightly further afield, just outside Horsham, is the incredibly popular Fisher’s Farm, which – like Holmbush – has a fantastic farmyard petting zoo with plenty of well-cared-for animals. Fisher’s Farm has an edge over Holmbush though, mainly due to the array of play equipment, rides and activities on offer. Your family could easily spend a whole day at Fisher’s Farm without doing the same thing twice.

Horsham is about thirty minutes’ drive from Gatwick, and is a lovely town to visit for the day. Its olde worlde charm, cobbled streets, and independent shops and boutiques (not to mention its endless restaurants and cafes) are fun to explore, whilst the relaxed atmosphere and pretty surroundings will soothe your soul. Try visiting on a Saturday, when the farmers’ market comes to town and the brass band play in the bandstand.

Finally, before you bid farewell to Gable End after your holiday in the south east, why not treat the kids to a day at Go Ape in Tilgate Park? Join your offspring swinging, abseiling, climbing, and jumping through the treetops, all safely strapped in and accompanied by trained professionals. It’s one of the most fun experiences that all the family can enjoy, full of laughs and lasting memories of your time together.
